Leadership training is crucial for all physician-leaders in the modern health care system — and cardiovascular physicians are no exception. Despite the need for cardiologist-leaders to have adequate leadership skills training, formal leadership education is often absent in cardiovascular disease fellowship programs. Leadership is also not separately assessed as part of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education core competencies.
Fellows and faculty members face increasingly complex patient panels in both inpatient and outpatient settings as medical comorbidities increase and treatment options continue to develop. Physicians are increasingly working against the clock due to the demands of documentation and the logistical overhead of patient throughput in our health care system.

The modern cardiovascular intensive care unit (CICU) has dramatically evolved from the classic coronary care unit. Faculty engagement is important for any cardiovascular fellowship program. As per Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education requirements, every program requires participation of core teaching faculty. Identifying and engaging core faculty is critical for a program to sustain its educational mission. It is also important to engage non-core teaching faculty in order to extend the diversity and available resources within the program.
As in all graduate medical education, focus on general cardiology training is shifting away from number of procedures and moving towards clinical competency. For common procedures such as coronary angiography and trans-esophageal echocardiography, fellows have ample opportunity to practice in a structured, supervised learning environment.
Adopting a hybrid attending-fellow-in-training (AFIT) training model may offer a solution to funding an additional year of training for structural heart disease (SHD) trainees, while also allowing them to act as part-time interventional cardiology attendings, according to a Fellows in Training/Early Career column published Feb. 12 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

The Education Research Poster Session will be held in conjunction with the Training Directors’ Symposium on Friday, April 1st, 12:30 pm – 6 pm, and all members of the CV Training Section are invited to submit entries to the session.
In the coming days, many cardiology fellowship program directors will finalize their rank order lists for submission to National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) — the final step in the recruitment of fellows for July 2016. Simultaneously fellowship applicants will also be giving finishing touches to their own rank order lists of training programs.
