ACC's International Conferences in Latin America, Asia and the Middle East have created an unprecedented platform over the last few years for interactive, engaging and innovative global education. Each conference offers opportunities to examine evidence-based strategies, as well as contemporary best practices and clinical decision-making, through the lens of each region.

Earlier this year, Cardiology spotlighted the Latin America Conference held in Cartagena, Colombia, and its success in bringing to light the global implications of the cardiovascular disease epidemic in the developing world, as well as best practices for managing coronary artery disease, cardiovascular implications associated with infectious diseases and more.

The ACC Asia and Middle East conferences held early this fall were no different in terms of addressing cardiovascular topics of importance to each region.

The ACC Asia Conference chaired by Aaron D. Kugelmass, MD, FACC, and Keiichi Fukuda, MD, PhD, FACC, and held in partnership with the Japanese College of Cardiology in Nagoya, Japan, in September kicked off with an opening plenary session reminding attendees that 60 percent of the world's population is in Asia.

The meeting provided an important opportunity to encourage sharing of data across borders to best care for similar patient populations throughout the region, while also facilitating important discussions around telehealth, artificial intelligence, cholesterol management and the new ACC/AHA Prevention Guidelines.

Pamela B. Morris, MD, FACC, did a great job highlighting rapid advances in preventive treatments and the opportunities and challenges for patients and clinicians. "Preventing cardiovascular disease is our job," she said.

The ACC again partnered with the Emirates Cardiac Society to host the ACC Middle East Conference 2019 together with the 10th Emirates Cardiac Society Congress in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in October.

Led by conference co-chairs Dipti Itchhaporia, MD, FACC, and Abdullah Shehab, MBChB, MMed, FACC, cardiovascular professionals from across the region were able to discuss, share and critique the latest in cardiovascular disease prevention and care.

Speakers covered a range of topics, including the role of genetic testing in inheritable cardiovascular diseases and novel risk factors for heart disease in women.

K. Srinath Reddy, MD, DM, MSc, president of the Public Health Foundation of India and former president of the World Heart Federation, also provided a closer look at the global burden of noncommunicable diseases.
