Marcelo Queiroga, MD, FACC, Named Brazil's Minister of Health

Marcelo Queiroga, MD, FACC, has been appointed the new health minister for Brazil. Queiroga currently serves as the president of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC), an important ACC partner in providing localized education and resources to cardiovascular clinicians throughout Brazil and Latin America.

"The American College of Cardiology extends its congratulations to Dr. Queiroga for being appointed as the Minister of Health in Brazil. The Brazilian Society of Cardiology has been a strong partner of the American College of Cardiology and significant contributor to the ACC's Assembly of International Governors for many years. We wish him well as he takes on this important role," says Hani K. Najm, MD, MSc, FACC, ACC's Assembly of International Governors Chair.

Like other countries worldwide, cardiovascular disease is a major cause of premature mortality and increasing health care costs throughout Brazil. With Brazil facing the second highest number of COVID-19 infections and deaths after the United States, patients with cardiovascular disease and other related risk factors are at greatest risk. The ACC and SBC have been working closely to educate clinicians and patients about the latest COVID-19 research and best practices, while also continuing to raise awareness about heart disease prevention and treatment and address regional issues like Chagas disease and more.
