WASHINGTON (May 15, 2021) -

Jacek Kwiecinski, MD, PhD, Evangelos Tzolos, MD, and Chrishan J. Nalliah, MBBS, PhD,were named winners of the American College of Cardiology's prestigious William W. Parmley Young Author Achievement Award. The awards recognize three outstanding papers published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology by primary authors who are within five years of completing training requirements for a specialty board certification or a PhD.

Kwiecinski, who conducted his research at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA, is being honored for his study: "Coronary 18F-Sodium Fluoride Uptake Predicts Outcomes in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease." His mentor, Piotr J. Slomka, PhD, is also being recognized. Kwiecinski's manuscript was published in the June 23, 2020 issue of JACC.

Tzolos, who conducted his research at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA, is being honored for his study: "Coronary 18F-Sodium Fluoride Uptake Predicts Outcomes in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease." His mentor, Piotr J. Slomka, PhD, is also being recognized. Tzolos's manuscript was published in the June 23, 2020 issue of JACC.

Nalliah, who conducted his research at Royal Melbourne Hospital & University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, is being honored for his study: "Epicardial Adipose Tissue Accumulation Confers Atrial Conduction Abnormality." His mentor, Jonathan M. Kalman, MBBS, PhD, is also being recognized. Nalliah's manuscript was published in the September 8, 2020 issue of JACC.

The award, named for Dr. William W. Parmley, a past editor-in-chief of JACC, honors three young authors per year. Papers are judged on originality, methodology, presentation and importance. The award commends not only the young investigator but also the program in which he or she is working. The Parmley Prize is funded by Elsevier.

"William Parmley was a pioneer for all cardiovascular researchers," said JACC Editor-in-Chief Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, MACC. "I feel proud that JACC continues to honor his legacy by recognizing up-and-coming researchers, as well as their mentors and institutional research programs."

This year's Parmley Awards will be given out during the ACC's 70^th Annual Scientific Session, taking place virtually May 15-17, 2021. The award includes a stipend to attend an ACC educational event, a plaque and special recognitions at the virtual ACC.21 Convocation Program at the JACC Editorial Board meeting and in an upcoming issue of JACC.
