WIC Engagement Report: Financial Planning Series

It is very important that female cardiologists are knowledgeable about their personal finances and wealth management. To address this need, a financial planning series for female cardiologists was organized and received an ACC Women in Cardiology (WIC) Engagement grant to help fund the initiative. The series offered a forum for these busy women to learn about protecting and growing their wealth, to ask relevant questions to experts in the field, and to open dialogue with colleagues about many shared concerns and uncertainty.

Our financial planning series was a joint initiative between ACC's Massachusetts and Connecticut Chapters, in partnership with Lauren Oschman, CFP, CDFA, and Jacque Denson, CFP, of Vestia Wealth Advisors. We chose to work with Vestia Wealth Advisors because of their commitment to working with female physicians. Our series comprised three virtual sessions and one in-person session at ACC.24, held in April in Atlanta, GA. The virtual sessions covered topics such as cash flow, saving, risk management, investments, taxes and contract negotiations.

By creating a joint initiative between ACC's Massachusetts and Connecticut Chapters we were able to learn from and collaborate with a broader network of like-minded colleagues. This also helped expand the target audience of our series to provide important teaching to a larger group.

The Vestia lectures were remarkably relevant to a group of female physicians. Oschman and Denson were well-informed about many of the unique practicalities of prolonged training and delayed salary earning, as well as the unique considerations required in salary negotiating in varied professional environments, along with the importance a thoughtful approach to optimal tax and investment strategies. Finally, the session held during ACC.24 provided an opportunity to network in person and the ability to ask questions in a more intimate setting.

We received many positive comments from our colleagues about how much they enjoyed and learned from our series. We extend a sincere thank you to the ACC WIC Council for the support we received through the ACC WIC Engagement Grant to host this financial planning series.
