WIC Spotlight: Why I Chose Cardiology

My interest in the field of cardiology was sparked at a very young age when my family members would visit the doctor for cardiovascular-related diseases. This interest only grew stronger when I studied human physiology in medical school. While studying physiology, I was excited and curious about the complex mechanisms behind each heartbeat.

The field of cardiology has many attributes that appeal to me personally. I appreciate its complexity, the opportunity it provides to make a significant impact on patients' lives and the continuous advancements in treatment options. Cardiology offers a diverse range of cases, from preventive care to complex interventions. The ability to diagnose and treat various cardiovascular conditions keeps the field intellectually stimulating and rewarding.

My Role Models and Mentors

I am grateful to Rosy Thachil, MD, FACC, for guiding me through my journey as I get ready to apply for fellowship, and introducing me to ACC's Women in Cardiology Section, as the section has allowed me to connect with and learn from other female cardiologists. Additionally, I have learned the importance of research, community work and the true meaning of solidarity thanks to Johanna Paola Contreras, MD, FACC, who allowed me to be part of her multiple projects aimed at closing the gap of cardiovascular disease disparities among minorities and underserved communities.

My Career Interests

I am interested in interventional cardiology and critical care. I would also love to be involved in community work dedicated to distribution of cardiovascular care awareness among minorities and underserved communities.

Advice For Women in Cardiology

Keep going and find strong mentorship! The cardiology path may seem hard, but with the right support, you can do it!
