ACC HF and Transplant Section Chair Speaks on Health Outcomes in HF Treatment
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) convened a Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory Committee (MEDCAC) meeting March 22 to inform future decision-making on coverage of heart failure (HF) technologies. The panel of physicians and other experts voted on questions considering which types of outcomes are useful for evaluating HF technology studies. Biykem Bozkurt, PhD, MD, FACC, chair of ACC’s HF and Transplant Section, attended the meeting on behalf of the ACC. In collaboration with other medical specialty and patient groups, she and others presented information and answered Committee questions about the utility of HF or all-cause hospitalization, urgent care visits, reverse remodeling, quality of life measures and functional assessments as appropriate outcome metrics. MEDCAC panels are advisory and do not make coverage decisions, but CMS may rely on their advice.
