FIT Reflections on ACC’s Missouri Chapter Activities
"Physicians often practice in silos," remarked Brett Wesley Sperry, MD, during the second day of the 53rd Annual Dr. Robert D. Conn Heart Conference in Kansas City. The conference, sponsored by Saint Luke's Mid-America Heart Institute and supported by ACC's Missouri Chapter, honors Robert D. Conn, MD, a dedicated Kansas City physician committed to physician and nurse education who initiated "The Heart" cardiovascular symposium. The event was later renamed in Dr. Conn's honor.
In his lecture on amyloidosis, Sperry highlighted the increasing subspecialization within cardiology. He emphasized the disconnect between specialists who may focus on specific aspects of a patient's condition. The need for constant intra-speciality updates in this rapidly advancing field became apparent as cardiology practitioners found themselves working in relative isolation.
Recognizing this challenge, ACC's Missouri Chapter is proactive in providing opportunities for education and collaboration. The annual update in cardiovascular disease, held in Nov. 2023, in Columbia, MO, covered a spectrum of topics. Malissa J. Wood, MD, FACC, past chair of ACC's Board of Governors, addressed the imperative of eliminating disparities in cardiovascular health. Following this, a multistate clinical trial primer, hosted by ACC's Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma Chapters, featured experts presenting the latest science.
The Dr. Robert D. Conn Heart Conference is a testament to ACC Missouri Chapter's commitment to comprehensive updates. Covering CAD/PAD treatment, prevention, structural and electrophysiology updates, the conference featured experts from across the country. James C. Fang, MD, FACC, from the University of Utah discussed cardiorenal interaction in advanced heart failure patients, while Kathryn Lindley, MD, FACC, from Vanderbilt University explored hormone replacement therapy in current cardiology practice. Sanjiv Jayendra Shah, MD, FACC, from Northwestern University presented advances in diagnosing and phenotyping patients with HFpEF, earning the James E. Crocket Lectureship award for his groundbreaking theory on HFpEF population phenotypes.
As a FIT member of ACC's Missouri Chapter, I witnessed firsthand the commitment of our chapter to educate, connect and support our nearly 1,000 members. As we concluded 2023, our focus turns to the exciting opportunities awaiting us in 2024, including fellow research grants and national ACC initiatives.
