JACC FIT/Early Career Page: Enhancing Preventive CV Medicine Training During General Cardiology Fellowship
In order for cardiologists to be well versed in managing complex patient issues related to primary and secondary ASCVD prevention, the current preventive cardiovascular medicine training model for cardiology Fellow in Training (FITs) may need to be enhanced, according to an FIT/Early Career Page published Sept. 16 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Anurag Mehta, MD, et al., discuss limitations of the current paradigm of preventive cardiovascular medicine training during general cardiology fellowship and offer suggestions for improving this model. They add that advanced training in preventive cardiovascular medicine is crucial for general cardiology FITs aiming to serve in academic and preventive cardiology leadership positions.
In a response to the column, Roger S. Blumenthal, MD, FACC, comments that "as a co-chair of the 2019 ACC/AHA Guideline on the Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease, I strongly endorse their views." He adds, "The best intervention for cardiometabolic disorders and ASCVD is effective primary and secondary prevention; thus, it should be the foundation of cardiology fellow training and not a side decoration."
