A recent Expert Analysis, authored by Yong-Mei Cha, MD, FACC; Byron Kwock Lee, MD, FACC; and Mina K. Chung, MD, FACC, members of ACC’s Electrophysiology (EP) Section Leadership Council, examines advances in cardiac implantable electric devices (CIEDs) in 2016, including pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), cardiac resynchronization therapy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compatible CIEDs, CIED implant complications and battery recalls. The authors note that “following the [U.S. Food and Drug Association’s (FDA)] approval in late 2015 of the first ICD system approved for use during MRI scans, 2016 saw the expansion of additional FDA-approved MRI-conditional CIEDs and lead systems, including [cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator] systems, additional pacing systems, and some conventional pacing leads approved for MRI use with MRI-compatible devices.” Read more on ACC.org.
