On the workforce front, the authors write that opioid patients are source of clinician burnout. They highlight a recent article published in PLOS One – nurses on the front lines of treating addiction patients cited factors "related to managing patients' pain, overall communication and threats to personal safety" as key contributors to feelings of burnout.
