State-of-the-Art Review Looks at Benefits of SDD After Percutaneous Transcatheter Interventions

With the advancement of percutaneous transcatheter interventions as standard therapies for cardiovascular diseases, complication rates are lower, making same-day discharge (SDD) possible for patients, according to a state-of-the-art review published July 10 in JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions.

Amar Krishnaswamy, MD, FACC, et al., provide the rationale, available data and framework for SDD across the spectrum of percutaneous cardiovascular procedures, including coronary, peripheral and structural cardiovascular interventions. As part of their review, they provide recommendations for a safe SDD pathway and an SSD checklist for a care pathway after transcatheter cardiovascular interventions.

The authors highlight that the key elements needed for safe SDD already exist across various transcatheter procedures, including appropriate patient and procedure selection, close postprocedural observation, predischarge assessments specific for each type of procedure, and the existence of a patient support system beyond hospital discharge.

They note that SDD can benefit patient management and hospital-based resource use, stating, "There is mounting evidence for SDD after various coronary, peripheral, and structural procedures, and creating care pathways that reflect the safety of earlier discharge with appropriate patient selection can be safe and successful.”
