An International Perspective on ACC.12
CardioSourceNews sat down with Sarah C. Clarke, MA, MD, FRCP, FESC, FACC, vice president of education and research at the British Cardiovascular Society (BCS) in London, to learn how she became involved with the ACC and what she's most looking forward to at ACC.12 in Chicago from an international perspective.
How did you become involved with the ACC?
I became involved with the ACC through my work with the BCS. I was approached to blog for ACC.10 alongside a U.S. blogger and I also contribute to the ACC International newsletter.
What are you looking forward to most about ACC.12 in Chicago?
From a personal perspective, the meeting will give me an invaluable update for my continuing professional development across the breadth of cardiology, all in one place. It is important for me to attend sessions outside of my specialist area of interest (intervention), where I have the most experience, so I can keep up to date in all areas of cardiology, since I see patients in my general clinics with all types of cardiac conditions. I will also have the opportunity to meet experts in industry and build links with my own institution for research etc. I am looking forward to the new “Innovators Session” at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday!
As vice president for education and research at the BCS, being in Chicago will give me the opportunity to meet colleagues from the ACC and in particular, the California Chapter with which the BCS is twinned. Such meetings allow for important exchange of ideas and experience and allow for future planning of meetings on both sides of the pond. Lastly, the meeting gives me an opportunity to network with colleagues not only from home, but from around the world. Important links and collaborations can be formed. It is important to hear about the challenges faced by cardiologists around the globe and how we all try to address them to the benefit of our patients.
