PROGRAM
OVERVIEW
Statement of Need
“Heart disease isn’t just a man’s disease.”
The message of this quote is clear. In the United States, twice
as many women die of heart disease as of all forms of cancer. The
time to promote good cardiovascular health and discourage behaviors
that lead to CVD risk is now. Though certain risk
factors — increased age, race, ethnicity, gender and heredity
— cannot be controlled, unhealthy lifestyle behaviors can
and should be controlled. Only by modifying risky habits that lead
to high blood pressure and high cholesterol such as smoking, physical
inactivity and poor nutrition will cardiovascular disease be reduced
in women.
Attend The Heart of Women’s Health program and increase
competence in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease
among female patients.
Overview
For three successful years, the Heart of Women’s Health event
has helped healthcare professionals provide better treatment for
their female patients in the ongoing battle against heart disease,
the number one cause of death and disability among American women.
Through stimulating, interactive learning sessions taught by expert
faculty, the event raises awareness and increases knowledge for
all providers who treat female patients with CVD or those at risk
for its development. The one-and-a-half day conference covers such
important topics as valve disease, hypertension, dietary and lifestyle
intervention, gender, racial and ethnic differences in acute presentation,
and response to therapies. Course offerings examine contemporary
methods of advising women at risk of heart disease, encouraging
lifestyle strategies for the prevention of CVD, and providing optimal
care for those who develop CVD.
The knowledge, awareness and competency gained through this program
will enable participants to focus on the specific needs of female
patients and thus to provide superior treatment.
Learner Objectives
The overall goal of this program is to enhance knowledge and ultimately
increase competency in the treatment of cardiovascular disease in
women.
Upon completion of this program, attendees should be able to —
- Distinguish gender disparities of care in the management, diagnosis
and treatment of female patients
- Incorporate current and emerging clinical evidence in the comprehensive
assessment and management of patients with or at risk of cardiovascular
disease
- Identify cultural factors and disparities in CVD outcomes when
developing risk reduction programs and caring for people from
different racial, ethnic and gender groups
- Evaluate different assessment tools as a predictor of cardiovascular
disease in women
