PROGRAM
OVERVIEW
Statement of Need
Fellows in Training (FITs) who are contemplating a future in academic
medicine need guidance on the variety of career options available
to them. To meet this need, the American College of Cardiology Foundation
has developed a program that provides an opportunity for FITs to
network and learn from experienced academicians about their field
of expertise and the lessons learned along the way.
Overview
Are you considering a career or recently accepted a position in
academic cardiovascular medicine? If so, you need to attend the
How to Become a Cardiovascular Investigator program. This
intimate and interactive program is specifically designed for Fellows
in Training who are contemplating a future in academic medicine.
Through plenary sessions, breakouts, networking opportunities and
a dinner program, participants will have the opportunity to interact
with the leading experts in the field. Renowned cardiovascular investigators
will provide guidance on a variety of topics including the best
careers in academic medicine, how to locate the perfect job and
the secrets to getting funded.
Learner Objectives
The overall goal of this program is to enhance learners’ competence
in their ability to become a cardiovascular investigator.
Upon completion of this program, attendees should be able to —
- Identify careers in academic cardiovascular medicine
- Formulate strategies to obtain independent grant funding
- Develop a plan for integrating an academic career with patient
care, research and teaching.

WILL BE AVAILABLE TO PARTICIPANTS DURING THE PROGRAM. PARTICIPANTS
MUST BRING A LAPTOP TO THE PROGRAM TO ACCESS THE SYLLABUS MATERIALS.

This program is intended for Fellows in Training.
ACCREDITATION
Physicians
The American College of Cardiology Foundation is accredited by the
Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide
continuing medical education for physicians.
The ACCF designates this educational activity for a maximum of
10.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should
only claim credits commensurate with the extent of their participation
in the activity.
While offering credits noted above, the program is not intended
to provide extensive training or certification in the field.

Room Rates
The room rate is $165 plus 14.5 percent state and local taxes (subject
to change) per night. The ACC room block will be held until Wednesday,
November 4, 2009 but may sell out prior to this date. We
advise you to register for the program and reserve your lodging
as soon as possible. When you make your reservation, please be sure
to ask about early departure fees or cancellation penalties.
Check in time at the Embassy Suites Hotel Downtown DC is 4:00 p.m.,
check out time is 12:00 noon. Early arrivals accepted on a space
availability basis only.

GENERAL
INFORMATION
Tuition
There is no tuition for this program, however, participants are
asked to provide a credit card number which will only be debited
if the cancellation policy stated below is not adhered to. All registrations
must be made in advance. There is a limited number of seating and
it is on a first-come, first-served basis. The program will include
refreshments, lunch, reception and dinner with the faculty.
Cancellations
Because of advance planning requirements and the limited seating
for this program, please provide written notification as soon as
possible if you need to cancel. NOTE: There will be
a $100 charge for cancellations not received by Wednesday, November
4, 2009.
In the unlikely event that the program is canceled, the College
will not be responsible for any travel or hotel costs you may incur.
ACCF reserves the right to cancel programs in the unlikely event
of insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen circumstances. If
a program is canceled or postponed, ACCF will refund registration
tuition but cannot be held responsible for other costs or expenses,
including cancellation/change penalties assessed by airlines, travel
agencies or hotels.
