PROGRAM
OVERVIEW
Statement of Need
Cardiovascular training program directors are a critical
group of educators responsible for the development of the future
base of cardiologists. Both the American College of Graduate Medical
Education (ACGME) and American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)
establish guidelines and requirements for fellowship training programs,
and are currently migrating from a topic and time based curricula
to one that is competency-based. It is imperative that program directors
receive education and tools to manage this paradigm shift. In order
to maintain high quality training programs that, in turn, educate
cardiologists who are prepared to deliver the highest quality patient
care, program directors must partake of education and tools to manage
these changes. The American College of Cardiology Foundation presents
a forum for fellowship program directors to communicate with each
other, discuss effective teaching and learning methods for fellows,
and learn from education experts.
Overview
The overall goal of this program is to improve the skills
of training program directors and coordinators in complying with
ACGME and ABIM requirements and to understand the challenges inherent
to educating cardiologists today. Training program directors have
few, if any, planned learning activities to prepare them for and
support them in this role. The program efficiently meets these learning
needs and establishes a forum to develop standard approaches to
the planning, delivery and evaluation of cardiology training programs.
The program features a panel of leading faculty and experts who
will inform program directors and coordinators about present and
future national requirements and provide strategies and tools that
they can apply in their own setting to assure compliance and improve
their skills as local leaders in education.
Learner Objectives
This education activity is designed to improve the education and
structure within cardiovascular fellowship programs to assure competent
practice.
Upon completion of this program, attendees should be able to —
- Design curriculum and use evaluation tools for cardiology training
programs that comply with ACGME/ABIM requirements
- Apply ACGME requirements in the delivery and documentation of
training program curricula and evaluation methods
- Manage professional relationships between and amongst trainees
and related training program personnel
